I think even non crocheters have heard of granny squares, maybe even granny hexagons, but have you ever seen a granny pentagon? Granny triangle? Or the ever-elusive granny circle? No, I do not mean a circle mandala.

Granny squares are what I learned from my grandmother as a child. She later taught me how to put them together, but I don’t actually remember finishing a project – well, at least there is no evidence. Since the good ol’ days, I have learned how to make other granny shape motifs: triangle, square, pentagon, hexagon and even a circle, perfecting the technique for a cleanier and more finished look to each motif.

Because the granny motif is crocheted in the round, they can be any size you desire, and due to their size flexibility, a motif be made big enough to serve as an afghan…two could be made large enough to cover a pillow form…a friend of mine seamed two triangles to make a poncho…the possibilities are endless.

I put together a handout for my crochet classes at The Knitting Tree L A and as I am trying to update A Hooker’s World, I thought I would make this handout available for the nominal fee of USD $1.00. All shapes are included in this document. The pattern for all granny motif may only be purchased on my patterns page, as it does not conform to Ravelry database standards. This is more of an instructional document; I am not suggesting any specific yarn, as the motifs can be made from anything. I do suggest that whatever yarn you are going to use, you use the appropriate hook size for the yarn of your choice.
