I’m Hooked…

…on a stitch pattern.

Found this pattern: Ombre Shawl Crochet Pattern on the internet and loved the look of the shawl. The beginning was a little tricky – due to poor vision, but once I picked it up. I am making Digging Your Scene – by The Blow Monkeys – Wrap with the leftovers from the Oakland Raiders Afghan: Michaels Loops & Threads Impeccable (Fiber Content: 100% Acrylic; Yarn Colors: 01005 White, 01040 Black, and 01044 True Grey; Yarn Weight: 4, Aran) on a US K10.5/6.5 MM hook.

To honor Maddie Made It’s hospitality Friday night, and the 25% discount I received on my purchase, I bought some Universal Cotton Supreme DK (Fiber Content: 100% Cotton; Yarn Colors: 701 White, 723 Silken, and best guess: 713 Hot Pink; Yarn Weight: 3, DK) and started American Pie – by Don McLean and based on the pi-influenced stripe pattern. With approximately 690 yards, and with a US F5/3.75 MM hook, I figure I’ll get a small shawl if not a large kerchief, either way, I just love the color combo.

One In Ten Afghan

1 In 10 Afghan

1 In 10 Afghan

I finally found…

  • the perfect pattern for the next scrap afghan
  • my new portable project
  • and a project name – One In Ten – to honor one of my most favorite bands – 808 State

I’ll admit I was wary of picking up stitches, which I have done incorrectly, but present as as an invisible join…more or less! Even with the fur yarns, I did not have any difficulty finding the stitches to pick up. After about a couple of turns, I have learned how to turn the same way each time. I am not an avid fan of the holes in the turn, preferring a defined ridge decoration.

The good news is that I have already run out of scraps! The bad news, is that I have to start making more light weight stuff for more scraps, as this is a combination of yarn weights 1, 2, and 3 to make a 4 ply yarn to work with. So far I have gotten luck with maintaining an even ply…more or less.

Yarn A: Red Heart Super Saver (Fiber Content: 100% Acrylic; Yarn Color: 0319 Cherry Red; Yarn Weight: 4, Worsted)
Yarn B: Red Heart Super Saver (Fiber Content: 100% Acrylic; Yarn Color: 0376 Burgundy; Yarn Weight: 4, Worsted)
Hook: US M – 9.0 mm
Dimensions: 6 x 9 inches

Mom and dad bought an iPad the other day and I made them a case for it. Each yarn is double stranded for a total of four strands. I purposefully mad the case super thick to protect the case from breakage should it be dropped. Still I told mom she should put a button on it and I could crochet a chain latch to prevent it from falling out through the top.

Project name – Sublime by Supreme Beings of Leisure – is a random selection from my music library.

Oh whoa! Oh whoa! Oh whoa!

Loved the pattern result. I indicated medium difficulty rating because I am an advance crocheter; Lynette had difficulty with the pattern as a less experienced crocheter. Advise confident knowledge of back/front post construction, which took me a minute to get my stitch count down. The other thing that threw me for a loop was the half double crochets, whose top stitch points left versus double crochet which point right.

Noticed some errors in the copy: Border indicates SC count…should be stitch count. Notified Caron. Once again when it come to the border, my counts got all messed up, so I improvised a border; also because we were not sure we had enough yarn. Commendation to Cascade Yarns for getting back to me within 24 hours; I was right should have read “stitches,” not “single crochet.”

When I calculated 5 skein yardage, I was short. Another visit to the store only produced one more skein and I thought we needed at least two.

Oh well, I am just waiting to hear from the client as to whether she is satisfied and then I will sew in the ends, fluff it and deliver it.

I always try to find a project appropriate song name for my projects, but I my choices are lessening. I named this project after Baby by Justin Bieber. I think I may just start picking song names at random.

Dimensions: Unknown (forgot to measure before gifting)

I had no blue yarn in my stash to make something for our latest member of One Skein Short and two days before we had our gift exchange, my sister brought over some yarn for me, which included this indigo cotton yarn. Perfect! I set to creating a alternating front post/back post treble crochet cowl. I thought the cotton would be good for this member, as I did not know if she runs hot or cold; my feelings were that a light weight fiber was more in line.

Another xmas gift finished and started another today, which I should be able to finish today. That makes only one more gift to make and I will have crafted a gift for every member of the One Skein Short group. I am excited to be using yarn that has been sitting on my self, collecting dust. Another benefits is that I have made a scratch in my yarn stash.

This gift – while not exactly the desired color – was named Dreams by The Cranberries – which is as close as I can get to the desired color.

I found the pattern to be a quick work up, despite minor errors in the pattern, which my skill level enabled me to improve on. I really like the design the stitch pattern (staggered Vs) created.

Only three more gifts to make for xmas and I will have made gifts for all the regular One Skein Short members. I’ve made this cowl before and it works up so quickly. The project name – Grey Matter Cowl by Oingo Boingo – is an appropriate selection from my music library. I don’t want to write too much, hoping that this will still be a surprise for the intended recipient.

Pick Up The Pieces Scrapghan: WIP

Pick Up The Pieces Afghan

In an effort to have less scraps lying around, I decided to start a scrapghan. I am crocheting a ribbed afghan, using alternating front and back post triple crochets. So far I have used Patons Canadiana (Fiber Content: 100% Acrylic, Yarn Color: 11420 Pretty Baby, Yarn Weight: 4, Worsted) from A-Tisket, A-Tasket Kerchief, some unknown blue from Agua de Beber Cowl, and three unknown purples from a test afghan I had previously started. For this project I am also using a J hook. I thought the project name – Pick Up The Pieces by Average White Band, was appropriate for this scrapghan.
